Beginning June 12, 1975, Vivien Reed starred in the pre-Broadway tryout of
Bubbling Brown Sugar at the Walnut. The musical revue celebrated the
Harlem Renaissance, featuring over 30 musical numbers by celebrated black
artists such as Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Billie Holiday.
When the production moved to Broadway it was nominated for three Tony Awards,
including Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Actress (Vivian Reed).
The show was revived at the Walnut by Philadelphia producer Moe Septee in
the summer of 1985.
