Historic Photo Gallery: 1969 to 1982
1971
Dance events were featured prominently as part of the Walnut's seasons as a
community arts center. The American Dance Festival brought six major modern
dance companies to the Walnut in 1971, including the Alvin Ailey American
Dance Theater Company performing Ailey's chorographical masterpiece,
Revelations.
Shown in this photograph, Revelations is based on Ailey's experience growing up as an
African American in the South and is today among the best-known and most frequently
seen of modern dance performances. (Photograph by Paul Kolnik, courtesy of Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater.)
