Historic Photo Gallery: Beginnings to 1849
1833
After becoming popular on the English stage, Irish comedians began to perform in America.
The most renowned of these was Tyrone Power, the great-grandfather of the Hollywood star.
He made his debut in September 1833 in
The Irish Ambassador and
The Irish Tutor. He became a favorite with American audiences and returned for two
more engagements. Sadly, on his return to England in 1841, the ship he was sailing on
was lost at sea. (Image courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
