Historic Photo Gallery: Beginnings to 1849
1809
Pepin and Breschard's New Circus opened on February 2, 1809 with a show that featured
eight lavishly costumed equestrian riders performing military exercises choreographed
to music. A few years later, an 80-foot dome was added to the theatre, making it the
tallest structure in Philadelphia at that time.
