1956
Thanksgiving week 1956, Marcel Marceau performed a week of pantomime at the Walnut.
Marceau was visiting on his first tour of the United States and critics were enchanted
by his performance. He went on to become world famous for his silent art, appearing
on television and film and even writing several children's books. Before his death
in September 2007, Marceau was honored by the French government, awarded several
honorary doctorates from various American universities, served as a Goodwill
Ambassador for the United Nations, and had a holiday proclaimed in his honor
when in 1999 New York City declared March 18 to be Marcel Marceau Day.
